What comes back

One flowing description: the subject, the exact moment, the setting, the light, the colours, the camera angle and the finish (photo, poster, painting…). The Director looks for one bold idea that makes the picture stop someone scrolling — a decisive moment, a striking scale, one colour that stands out — rather than a tidy stock photo. For photos of people it asks for natural skin, not a plastic look.

TipWords that must appear in the picture go in quotes: an ad for “STRIDE”. The Director never invents a brand name, price or slogan.

What ✨ Direct wrote
A 90-year-old grandmother with silver hair in a bun, deep laugh lines and a faded sage cardigan, her thin, spotted hand locked in an arm-wrestle with a burly, sunburnt farmer in a mud-streaked flannel shirt. His face is purple with strain, veins standing out, while she stays calm with a steely, almost amused stare, his knuckles a hair from the wooden crate. Between them on a chipped plate sits one glowing, flawless red tomato, the only saturated colour in a muted grey-green market. Behind them a crowd of shoppers roars, mouths open and arms thrown up, melting into soft blur, the stall's canvas sign left blank. Low golden backlight flares across the lens, with natural skin showing pores and fine wrinkles. Table-level low angle, the tomato sharp in the foreground, the pair off-centre. Cinematic documentary photograph, fine film grain.

It picked one feeling (the comedy of a calm grandma winning) and one idea to carry it: the tomato as the only bright colour, sharp in the foreground. It also chose the light, the low camera angle and the finish, and left the stall’s sign blank because no words were given.
